چکیده

CONTINUOUS PEBIDURAL ANAESTHESIA is a useful method of providing pain relief in patients with occlusive peripheral vascular disease and consequent limb gangrene. Although it is not known if the "sympathetic block" thus achieved improves peripheral circulation, a "warm" extremity and relief of pain seem desirable goals. There are a few reports of spinal peridural haemorrhage as a complication of peridural anaesthesia in patients receiving anti-coagulant therapy. Gringrich, 1 Butler, ~ Helperin 3 and DeAngelis 4 report such complications in association with the catheter technique of continuous peridural anaesthesia, and this report further emphasizes this partieular complication.

Arthroscopic debridement of the osteoarthritic knee under local anaesthesia.

This prospective study compared the efficacy of arthroscopic debridement in osteoarthritic knees under local, general or peridural anaesthesia. Between 1997 and 2001, 201 arthroscopic debridements were performed in 197 patients (173 partial meniscectomies, 192 articular trimmings, 119 microfractures, 201 lavage procedures) in 197 patients. Patients were treated under local (Group "L", n = 67), ...

Perioperative changes in pro and anticoagulant factors in prostate cancer patients undergoing laparoscopic and robotic radical prostatectomy with different anaesthetic techniques

BACKGROUND Laparoscopic prostatectomy (LRP) may activate clotting system influencing the risk of perioperative thrombosis in patients with prostate cancer. Moreover, different anaesthetic techniques can also modify coagulant factors. Thus, the aim of this study was to investigate the effects on pro- and anti-coagulant and fibrinolytic factors of two established types of anaesthesia in patients ...

Comparison of Oxiplex and Gore-Tex effectivity in an experimental peridural fibrosis model.

OBJECTIVE The authors conducted a study to compare the effectiveness of Oxiplex and Gore-tex in preventing postlaminectomy peridural fibrosis in rats. Peridural fibrosis is a common cause of pain in patients undergoing spinal surgery. To prevent scar formation numerous materials and methods have been employed such as non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), Gelfoam, Oxiplex, Gore-tex, ca...

The use of nerve blocks for studying cardiopulmonary physiology in man.

Anaesthetists employ nerve blocks for purposes other than providing surgical anaesthesia; that is, for diagnosis, therapy, and clinical investigation. In this regard the anaesthetist is in a unique position to make physiological observations in normal as well as abnormal subjects during nerve block procedures. Areas of specific importance to both physiologists and clinicians concern the innerva...

Peri-operative management of ophthalmic patients taking antithrombotic therapy.

Increasing number of patients presenting for ophthalmic surgery are using oral anti-coagulant and anti-platelet therapy. The current practice of discontinuing these drugs preoperatively because of a presumed increased risk of bleeding may not be evidence-based and could pose a significant risk to the patient's health. To provide an evidence-based review on the peri-operative management of ophth...
